What to ask when booking your boudoir photo shoot experience (and the answers to listen for)

Boudoir is having a moment — and I love that for us.

More people than ever are booking boudoir to celebrate a milestone, reconnect with themselves, create a wedding gift, or just because they’re ready to feel like themselves again. And with that popularity comes… a lot of options. Some amazing. Some confusing. Some wildly “too good to be true.”

Because here’s the thing: you’re not just hiring a photographer. You’re choosing an experience that involves vulnerability, trust, and a finished product you’ll keep for years. So yes — ask questions. The right studio will welcome them.

This guide covers the 20 questions I’d ask before booking boudoir anywhere (including with us), plus what you should be listening for in the answers so you can book with confidence.

How Revealed Studios creates sexy, tasteful, and sensual boudoir for all people

Since 2010, we’ve photographed boudoir for people of all ages, sizes, identities, comfort levels, and life stories. And while lighting and posing matter (they do), what matters most is the environment.

At Revealed, we treat boudoir like a luxury experience with real emotional stakes:

  • You’re guided, not “left to figure it out”
  • You’re in control of your level of coverage and comfort
  • We move at your pace
  • You’re never pushed into a vibe that isn’t you

Some clients show up feeling bold. Many show up feeling nervous. Both are normal. Our job is to create a space where you can exhale, feel held, and leave thinking: “Wait… that was actually fun.” To learn more, visit Our Approach page.

The Top 20 Questions to Ask Before Booking Your Boudoir Session

1) How long have you been photographing boudoir — and who do you photograph most?

You want experience with real clients, not only models. Listen for: a wide range of ages, body types, comfort levels, and a portfolio that reflects that.

Green flag answers sound like: “You’re always in control,” “we check in constantly,” “you can say no anytime,” “we never pressure skin level.”

3) How do you guide posing and expression?

If you’re not a professional model, you need direction. Listen for: step-by-step posing, natural movement prompts, and adjustments that feel supportive—not critical.

4) Who will be photographing me?

If it’s a studio with multiple photographers, ask to see the portfolio of the person you’ll work with. Your vibe matters.

Revealed note: Maggie is the owner and principal photographer, but Kelly Feldmiller is her associate and at times the work together.

5) What’s included in the experience (prep, styling support, hair + makeup)?

In 2026, most clients expect guidance, not guesswork. Listen for: wardrobe support, prep guides, consultation options, and clear day-of flow.

6) How long is the session and what does the timeline look like?

Look for: “not rushed,” built-in breaks, realistic time for outfits/sets, and an experience that respects your energy.

7) Do you help me choose outfits (even if I don’t own lingerie)?

The answer should be an enthusiastic yes. A modern boudoir studio should normalize options like: sweaters, button-downs, bodysuits, robes, slips, blazers, etc.

8) Where do you shoot? What sets are available?

Ask what the space looks like and how many “scenes” you can get. Listen for variety and intentional design.

9) What’s your lighting style — natural, studio, or both?

There’s no “right” answer — only what matches your taste. Look at their portfolio: do you want airy + natural, moody + cinematic, or a mix?

10) Do you photograph everyone the same?

You want customization. Listen for: adapting to your comfort level, your body, your vibe, and your goals—not a copy/paste shot list.

11) What does retouching include, and what won’t you change?

This one matters more than ever. Editing culture is intense right now. You deserve transparency.

Listen for language like:

  • “We remove temporary things (bruises, blemishes, strap marks).”
  • “We keep you looking like you.”
  • “We don’t reshape your body into someone else.”
  • “We can honor your preferences (more natural vs more polished).”

12) Do you use AI tools in editing? If so, how?

In 2026, it’s fair to ask. Green flags: they can explain their process clearly, they don’t do “face swapping,” and they still aim for natural skin texture and you looking like you.

13) Can I request more or less retouching?

You should always be able to request your comfort level. Some clients want everything kept real. Others want a more refined finish. A good studio won’t shame either.

14) What is the turnaround time, and do you offer sneak peeks?

Listen for: a clear timeline, what you receive first (proofs vs final), and realistic delivery windows.

Revealed note: We edit in-house for quality control. Typical turnaround is 7–10 business days to your gallery, with a sneak peek sooner.

You want to understand the process before you’re emotionally attached to the photos. Ask how you choose images, how purchasing works, and what products are available.

16) What’s your privacy policy — and do you ever share images without permission?

This is non-negotiable. The only acceptable answer is: no. You should opt in explicitly for any sharing.

17) How are my images stored and delivered?

Modern client expectation: secure delivery. Listen for: password-protected galleries, secure storage practices, clear retention policies, and options for discretion.

18) Can I bring a friend? Can I bring my partner?

This is personal. The best studios will talk it through with you.

Green flags sound like:

  • “Yes, if they’re supportive.”
  • “If they’ll make you self-conscious, let’s keep it just you.”
  • “If you’re doing couples boudoir, we’ll plan accordingly.”

19) What if I’m nervous / not confident / don’t know what to do?

This should be met with: normalizing + a plan. Listen for: reassurance, structure, guidance, and “most clients feel this way at first.”

20) What does it cost — and what am I actually investing in?

Boudoir pricing varies widely. What you’re paying for isn’t just “photos.” It’s: experience, coaching, lighting expertise, editing quality, privacy practices, products, and a team that knows how to hold the room.

A modern, trustworthy studio will explain pricing clearly, outline what’s included, and never pressure you into buying on the spot.

Final thought: trust your nervous system

When you talk to a photographer or studio, notice how you feel:
Do you feel rushed? Do you feel heard? Do you feel safe asking questions?

You deserve an experience that’s not only beautiful on the outside — but supportive on the inside.

FAQs

Here are a few other key questions to ask before your boudoir photoshoot:

Are these real clients?

Yes—this is a mix of real client sessions, styled sets, and featured work that reflects the range of what we create at our Chicago boudoir studio.

I’m nervous—can I still do this?

Totally. Nerves are normal. Most clients walk in feeling unsure and leave feeling empowered. You’ll be guided with clear direction the whole time.

Do you retouch images?

We retouch with a light, natural touch—think polished, not plastic. Skin smoothing, stray hairs, minor distractions… while keeping you looking like you.

Can my session include more than one style?

Yes. Many clients choose two looks (e.g., light + airy + black & white) or a mix of bridal + classic.
